Paint correction vs. ceramic coating: which do you need?
Paint correction fixes swirl marks and scratches; ceramic coating protects paint for years. How they differ, what each costs at A-1, and when to do both.

Short answer
Paint correction fixes the paint; ceramic coating protects it. Correction machine-polishes away swirl marks, car-wash scratches and light oxidation, starting at $300 at A-1 Auto Detailing. A ceramic coating bonds to the paint and protects it for years, starting at $600. If the paint has visible swirls, correct it first, because a coating seals in whatever is underneath.
Side by side
| Paint correction | Ceramic coating | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Removes swirls, light scratches and oxidation | Adds a hard, glossy, water-repellent layer |
| Fixes existing damage | Yes | No, it seals in what is there |
| How long results last | Until new scratches are added | Years, with proper washing |
| Starting price at A-1 | $300 | $600, prep included |
| Typical time | Up to a full day or more | A full day or more |
Choose paint correction if
- The paint looks hazy or dull even right after a wash
- You see circular scratches around reflections in the sun
- The vehicle has been through automatic car washes for years
Choose ceramic coating if
- The paint is already in good shape and you want to keep it that way
- You want easier washing and protection from salt, sun and bird droppings
- You plan to keep the vehicle for years
Doing both
The best result is correction first, coating second. Correction brings the paint back, and the coating protects that finish so it lasts. Light correction is already part of A-1's coating prep; paint with heavy swirls gets full paint correction first.
What about new vehicles?
New vehicles often arrive with light marring from transport and dealer washes. Levi assesses the paint first, and a new vehicle may need only the light correction that is already part of the coating prep.
Questions
Is paint correction the same as a ceramic coating?
No. Paint correction removes damage from the paint. A ceramic coating is a protective layer applied on top. They are often done together, correction first.
Can a ceramic coating hide swirl marks?
No. It adds gloss, but it seals in swirl marks rather than removing them. That is why correction comes first.
Which should I do first?
Paint correction, then ceramic coating.
